Yes, it’s #95 in my book The Passionate Olive – 101 Things to do with Olive Oil. On a recent episode of The Bachelorette in which the group traveled to Turkey, the bachelors were drizzled with olive oil and wrestled to the ground. They participated in this traditional Turkish sport with the winner awarded more time with the bachelorette.
The facts are that the village of Kirkpinar, Turkey, has been holding an annual oil-wrestling festival for centuries. It is a tradition that has lasted for over 600 years and dates back to the Turks’ exodus from Central Asia. It is a simple athletic competition in which big, burly men wearing leather pants pour olive oil over their bare chests and then, with oil glistening over their rippling muscles, they wrestle. The goal is to pin the other wrestler to the ground and the competition culminates with the winner being awarded the Golden Belt. As I understand it, there is quite an “unsportsmanlike” tactic to this event, that is, to cause your opponent to lose his concentration by sticking your hand down his pants!
Now that I think about it, you might want to combine your own version of this sport with item #67 in my book – Using Olive Oil to Enhance Sensual Pleasure. Oh my!
